The Childrenof IndiaAshama fills a basket of gravel, hoists it to her head, carries it to a waiting truck, then goes back to assist her blind husband in crushing more rock. Year in and year out the couple spends 10 to 12 hours each day in the stone quarry to earn less than a dollar a day to feed their two young daughters, Karuna and Rebecca, a meal of rice and lentils. The family lives in a small one-room mud house in the village and cooks over a fire of sticks and cow dung cakes. “I don’t want my girls to be like me,” Ashama told me. “Karuna is learning to read and write. She will be a nurse or a teacher. She will work for God. I am so happy she is going to school. Please find a sponsor for her sister, Rebecca. She too is a bright girl. She will study well.” Ashama’s cry for help is the same as that of many Indian parents who have accepted the message of God’s love for them. Unless their children go to school, they will have no hope for their children’s future, but to crush rock, dig in the fields, or do other menial labor for daily subsistence wages. Most of these parents can not read or write. They long for a better life for their children. After many centuries of darkness in India, the doors are now opening wide to the message of God’s love. Thousands are embracing Christianity and casting away their multitudinous gods and idols of wood and stone. However, poverty still remains, and education is the only pathway from it. Education costs money in India as well as in much of the rest of the world. America is blessed with government support. Most Indian children are either too poor or of the lower caste system and never rise above the poverty level which scarcely sustains life. STEPPING UPWARD is a program to help reverse this tragedy. Fifty dollars provides a month’s education and cost of materials for a high Shaker Step Stool which gives a child a future. Then they can go back to their village and help others step upward. We share with you these delightful step stools for the cost of one month of education plus the cost of materials. Unfortunately, wood is not cheap, but neither is the life and future of a child in India. May the windows of Heaven open wide with cascades of blessing to you and through you as you join us in Seeking to Serve.
